Abstract
EPISODE LENGTH: 43:45
SUMMARY: In this episode of The Fulcrum, the focus is on the recent ADA House of Delegates meeting, featuring updates from Virginia's ADA delegates, Drs. Ralph Howell, Frank Iuorno, Justin Norbo, Elizabeth Reynolds, Jonathan Wong, and Brenda Young. Discussion topics include the unprecedented election of a president-elect from the floor, strategic concerns such as the dissolution of the Strategic Forecasting Committee, the impact and future direction of sedation guidelines, and the ADA's financial challenges, particularly the implications of the Salesforce AMS. The episode explores the importance of member involvement and advocacy and contemplates potential changes in governance and membership dynamics to drive the ADA forward.
HOST: Ryan Dunn is the CEO of the Virginia Dental Association. Ryan has played major roles with four national and statewide Associations while also spending time working on Capitol Hill. When he’s not talking all things dental, he’s talking about his family and baseball–and sometimes both at the same time.
GUESTS:
Dr. Ralph Howell, Jr. brings more than three decades of leadership and service to the American Dental Association at the local, state, and national levels. A member of the ADA House of Delegates for 20 years, Howell has served as Delegate and member of multiple committees, including a term as Chairman of the Budget, Finance, and Administrative Matters Reference Committee. His national service also includes work with the ADA Council on Communications and with the ADA Council on Dental Practice, the ADA Continuing Education.
Dr. Frank Iuorno, Jr. is a dual-trained orthodontist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, past-president of the VDA, current Parliamentarian of the VDA, member of VDA Council on Government Affairs and Council on Constitution and Bylaws, and Vice Chair of the ADA Council on Government Affairs.
Dr. Justin Norbo is a member of the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association, the Northern Virginia Dental Society, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is a fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Norbo has served as an American Dental Association Delegate, served on the American Dental Association New Dentist Committee, and held other positions through the Virginia Dental Association and the Northern Virginia Dental Society. He is a past President of the Virginia Dental Association, the Virginia Academy of General Dentistry, and the Northern Virginia Dental Society.
Dr. Elizabeth Reynolds is a general dentist who practices in Richmond. She serves as a Virginia delegate to the ADA and has been on the delegation for 12 years, and is a past president of the Virginia Dental Association.
Dr. Jonathan Wong is a board-certified dentist anesthesiologist who completed his anesthesia residency at Stony Brook Medicine. He is an alternate delegate for the 16th District representing Virginia, Director at Large for the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, and works extensively promoting patient safety for patients undergoing sedation and anesthesia in the dental office through organizations such as Quad A and NFPA. Although he is a graduate of Southern Illinois Dental School, the closest he comes to working on teeth these days is brushing his three cats’ teeth 3-4 times a week.
Dr. Breanda Young has recently retired after almost 40 years of practice as a general dentist in Fairfax. She is a member of the International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists, Pierre Fauchard, and a Virginia Dental Association Fellow.
