Volume 104, Number 6 (2022)

Monthly, The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association brings news, information, and feature articles to our state's oral health community and the MDA's 6,200+ members. No publication reaches more Michigan dentists!

In this June 2022 issue, the reader will find the following original content:

  • A cover feature on the MDA Public Education Campaign
  • A 10-Minute EBD, "Are Neoplasms a Risk for Peri-Implantitis?"
  • A feature on "The President’s Address to the House of Delegates"
  • News you need: an Editorial, a Headquarters Report, Facts about MDA Peer Review, and regular department articles, Dentistry and the Law, Staff Matters, Advocacy, and component news

Plus, a case study feature article by Daniel K. Han, DDS, MD et.al that first appeared in the Journal of the Indiana Dental Association. The authors discuss how night guards, used to treat bruxism and temporomandibular disorder (TMD), are not without complications. Occlusal changes caused by improper use of these splints have been documented in the literature. This is especially likely when the splint covers only part of the arch, leading to over-eruption of the posterior dentition. This report examines the case of a 26-year-old male patient who developed an anterior open bite after using an over-the-counter (OTC) night guard. This is an unusual case, in which an anterior open bite caused by over-eruption of the third molars was corrected by surgical extraction.
