Abstract
In 1891, G.V. Black presented the idea of “Extension for Prevention.” The concept was to complete a restoration so that the margins and occlusal grooves were treated in such a way as to “prevent” further carious involvement. Hopefully his technique prevented millions of teeth from needing retreatment. However, dealing with humans and sometimes their “lack” of proper oral hygiene habits, new carious lesions do appear on the same teeth in the same or different areas, This article examines the conflict occurring between insurance coverage and the patient when experiencing a new caries on a previously restored tooth.
