Abstract
Dentists and members of the dental staff must be aware of the many possible medical emergencies which may arise during dental treatment. Asthma is one such condition and, as such, all dental professionals must be familiar with its triggers, recognize the signs and symptoms of an asthma attack, know what to do when an asthma attack occurs, and be familiar with strategies to mitigate the likelihood and severity of an asthma attack. Dentists must also be aware that asthmatics have an increased incidence of dental erosion, caries, periodontal disease and decreased salivary flow.
