The Evolution of Dental Hygiene Programs: From Its Inception to Today
Abstract
A prevention-oriented discipline, dental hygiene has long existed to prioritize patients’ needs through evidence-based techniques. When first developed, dental hygiene did not reflect the rigor and standardization that define modern practice. Since its origin over a century ago, dental hygiene has witnessed dramatic changes throughout the years. At what point did dental hygiene evolve from a “regular teeth cleaning” to an evidence-based practice with systemic effects? From its inception to today, dental hygiene has evolved into a discipline grounded in extensive clinical and academic knowledge, producing a significant impact on public health.
