A View from Our Perch: Going Through the International Dental Program

    Abstract

    International Dental Programs (IDPs) serve as a bridge between global dental education and seeking opportunities to practice and teach in the U.S.A. From our shared perspective—one of us (Upasana) is approaching graduation from an Advanced Standing DDS program and the other (Harvi) having recently transitioned into independent practice—we reflect on the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Internationally trained dentists enter this program with established professional identities, only to recalibrate clinical skills, communication styles, cultural diversity and confidence within a new healthcare system. By examining the experience both during and after the program, we aim to provide insight for prospective applicants, educators, and institutions seeking to better understand the reality and strengths of internationally trained dentists. Prospective students should recognize that honesty and transparency with patients and faculty are as critical as technical skills. Professionalism extends beyond clinical competency, encompassing cultural awareness and legal thoroughness in every patient interaction.
