Total Joint Replacement of the Temporomandibular Joint: An Overview

Abstract

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays a critical role in essential daily functions, including mastication, speech, and maintenance of airway patency. Owing to its unique anatomy and biomechanical demands, the TMJ is particularly susceptible to a variety of functional and structural disorders. Intra-articular Pain and Dysfunction (IPD) of the TMJ, which may involve the joint itself, the muscles of mastication, or associated osseous and soft tissue structures, affects approximately 5-12 percent of the general population. Patients with IPD frequently experience joint pain, functional limitations, or a combination of these symptoms, which can significantly impair quality of life.
