Recent Advances in Endodontics
Abstract
The goal of endodontic treatment, which encompasses vital pulp therapies, root canal treatment, and root end surgery, is to prevent and treat apical periodontitis. Recent advances in endodontics have led to improved diagnosis and more conservative treatment protocols which may lead to improved tooth survival. For instance, vital pulp therapies, on carious or traumatized teeth, using tricalcium silicate materials such as Biodentine (Septodont), preserve the pulp enabling completion of root development in immature teeth. Radiographic imaging, incorporating cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) has led to more precise diagnosis and planning of treatment. Instrumentation of curved canals has become technically easier due to the development of heat-treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) files, which are more flexible and have greater cyclical fatigue resistance compared to earlier generations of NiTi files.
