Recent Advances and Current Trends in Contemporary Orthodontics
Abstract
Rapid technological progress has been fundamentally reshaping orthodontics with the increasing adoption of digital clinical processes, additive manufacturing, and the early integration of artificial intelligence (AI). These developments influence patient diagnosis, appliance fabrication, treatment evaluation, and chairside efficiency. Three-dimensional (3D) printing has evolved from study models to direct-printed aligners and metal-printed appliances, while customized fixed systems (e.g., fully 3D-printed ceramic brackets and digitally customized labial systems) enable individualized biomechanics. AI tools are increasingly embedded within workflows and have worked to transform various aspects of clinical practice including, cephalometric landmarking, treatment planning, model superimposition, and digital indirect bonding. This review paper aims to synthesize currently available scientific evidence to recent advances and trends in the field of orthodontics, emphasizing practical integration, realistic benefits, and known limitations for clinical implementation.
