This Patient Dental Health Education pamphlet from 1971 details how dentists can collaborate with school athletic programs to improve oral health outcomes for students in sports.

From page 8: “The use of mouth protectors by athletes is becoming more widespread. Once used exclusively in football and boxing, they are now being used in soccer, ice hockey, lacrosse, basketball, touch football, field hockey, skiing, roller derby, surfing, water skiing, skimobiling, judo, karate, and parachuting. Dentists can evaluate mouth and face protectors and recommend the types which provide maximum comfort, the best possible protection, and freedom for breathing and speaking. Offer to assist with the mouth protector program. At the same time, discuss other services the dental society could be providing emergency care during practice and games, for example. These activities provide excellent opportunities to establish good working relations with school personnel.”
